Our mission is to practice design and educate students in design thinking and the application of design principles. We value the creation and appreciation of works of art and design, experimentation and exploration. It is the goal of DMD that our students make a lifelong contribution to society through their knowledge, critical thinking, aesthetics and innovative practice.
The focus of the Digital Media Design curriculum is to develop a new generation of designers and graduate them into careers in the creative industries from game design to graphic design, magazine design to interactive entertainment and much more. For more on the successes of DMD graduates check out the Alumns page and see where our students become professional designers.
Digital Media Design looks to the future: although we offer ‘traditional’ graphic design courses we are very much focused on what the design industry is doing now and where it’s going to be in the years ahead. We cover subjects that have become careers for students such as interface design, experience design, interactive design and service design. We prepare our students not just for the near future, but the future that the industry is only beginning to imagine.
Digital Media Design at FGCU is housed within the Art program. Design students currently sign up as Art majors and complete all their foundation courses in Art (Drawing 1, Methods and Concepts 1 and 2 etc.). Once they have completed these foundation courses they can begin to take 2,000 level and all their upper level courses in Digital Media Design. DMD Concentration students take 27 credits in design including the Digital Media Workshop course and the capstone experience of Senior Project.
The Digital Media Minor is designed for students outside of the Art Major who are interested in design or are from complimentary disciplines such as Marketing, Advertising or Communications. Any FGCU student can sign up for the DMD Minor.
